First, let us define trauma. There’s many different ways to describe it. One is this: too much, too fast, too soon. And then an inability to process the experience through because its coming in too hot. Or too soon. Or too fast. So the event, along with the corresponding feelings and thoughts get frozen. It may seem that’s it’s gone away but it hasn’t. It’s just waiting for the right time and place to thaw out and be properly processed. Making its presence known in often inconvenient times. For others the trauma may never seem to go away. That’s because its being re-experienced over and over. Stuck, like a broken record. The brain and body are attempting to process through the event, unsuccessfully.
I have found that Inner Child Work is a great way to reach those frozen points. It is critical to use healing modalities that reach the subconscious mind; this is where the trauma resides. This is where the stuckness can be reached. Just talking about the event (which you’ve maybe done many times already) doesn’t properly reach the trauma. It also doesn’t reach the part of you that can heal and create a new experience. Having a dialogue about your trauma typically reaches the analytical or conscious mind.
Connecting with your inner child is a deep, meditative experience. It drops well below your conscious mind. In this guided, meditative experience you will see your inner child where you left them. At that traumatic event. It is very powerful to witness it from the outside. To see just how small 3 years old is or 10 years old is. You will have an experience of what that event was like, for your inner child, while in your functional adult self. This in its self is transformative: to be able to be the witness to your younger self. Which is something that is always missing in trauma. A witness to what you experienced. Someone to validate it and say: “Yes, that happened. I see you. You are not alone. I’ve got you.”
You become the witness and the guardian of your inner child. Healing comes from this rejoining. Healing comes from restoring you to your own power. Healing comes from you ready and willing to thaw out the pieces and bring all parts back to the present. Reuniting all parts of yourself. You have the power to do this. Through trauma you have lost touch with that power. You experienced victimization and mistakenly became identified as victim. No power. No choice. Stuck. Healing comes from finding choice again.
When choice is restored a whole new field of possibility will start to open up. Restoring choice gives a new feeling in the body. It opens up this space where before there was trauma and no space and no ability to breathe. You find agency again. And guess what else comes with this? Intuition! Once this space opens up you can start to hear yourself again!
Find your people that help you create the safe space to do this work. Your inner child needs you! They are waiting for you and consequently no one else is coming for her/him except you. Make that decision and the help will appear. Your willingness is the magic ingredient.
